Troubleshooting

Here are details of some problems that may be encountered and how to resolve them. If you can't find your problem here, send us a message via the contact form explaining what is happening and we can have a look at the problem.

Some of the issues may be due to HMRC's gateway and API. You can check HMRC's MTD VAT API status page (opens a new tab/window) for further information.

VAT100 Box Values Do Not Match Spreadsheet Values

Typically this is boxes 6-9. HMRC do not accept the returns if these boxes are not in whole pounds. If pennies are included or a decimal point, HMRC reject the return. To minimse the chance of this happening, we round the boxes to the nearest whole pound. Check your formatted

Client or Agent Not Authorised

If you have successfully registered your account and authorised us but get the following error :

ERROR Returned

An error code has been returned by HMRC.

This IS NOT an error with this system, it is an error from the Government Gateway account.

It may not even be an error - it may be that we have asked for something we aren't allowed to ask for. Hopefully the error message will make it all clear (Hah!!!)

The error we got from the government gateway is shown below :

Error Code : CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED

Message: The client and/or agent is not authorised.

when trying to view your obligations (or anything else) it usually means that you have not told HMRC that you want to use mtdvatbridge.uk to file your VAT returns. You tell HMRC that you want to use us by clicking here. You will need to answer 'Yes', 'Yes', enter your government gateway ID and sign in, For further information have a look at the overview page for signing up after you have found the software.

If you think this is a bit much, you can always look for other software that's more suitable (You will have to go through the same process of telling HMRC all the information etc. so won't really save yourself any problems).

The 'XYZ' API is currently unavailable

Replace 'XYZ' with various API names e.g. 'organisations/vat'. This is an error beyond our control. It typically means that HMRC are having problems and have taken part of their system offline. All you can do is log out and try again later. If we are aware of the issue we will issue an alert on the home page and in the news pages. When it is cleared we will remoove the alert. Invalid Monetary Amount

The following is what is returned when you have supplied an invalid amount on one of your fields, e.g. you have supplied pence for one of boxes 6-9 :

You will need to correct this in your uploaded data. We do try and ensure the data is correctly formatted before we send it to HMRC so this error should never happen. If it does, send us your data so we can investigate :-)
